12 CPI-M leaders injured in an attack in Tripura

Agartala, Mar 23 (UNI) The opposition CPI-M in Tripura on Sunday threatened to launch a statewide agitation unless police arrest all the FIR-named accused persons immediately for attacking their public meeting and brutally assaulting a dozen of its leaders on Saturday late hours.

On Sunday, Party State Secretary and Leader of opposition Jitendra Chaudhury alleged that Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha failed to protect the political parties' rights and security of Tripura's people. Under BJP’s rule law and order has collapsed and all criminals, and anti-social elements took shelter in the saffron party, and police became puppets in the hands of BJP goons, he alleged.

According to report, a group of BJP workers under the leadership of Ramnagar Mandal president Amitabha Bhattacharjee resorted to an attack with arms on a pre-scheduled public meeting in Joynagar area of the city bordering Bangladesh in the presence of a large contingent of security personnel.

“The miscreants in a group suddenly attacked our leaders from the back breaching the security barricade and mishit them on their heads, but police were found standing silently. They hurled bombs and demonstrated firearms in front of police. Finally, the people gathered in the spot raised a counterattack, which forced them to leave the place,” Chaudhury stated.

At least 12 senior CPI-M leaders including party’s state committee member and former MLA Ratan Das, Srijan Deb, Subhashis Ganguly, and nine others have been shifted to Agartala Govt Medical College. Five of them were admitted with critical injuries, and the rest have been released.

After the incident, a large number of CPI-M workers gathered at the West Agartala police station in the evening led by party leaders Pabitra Kar, Sankar Prasad Datta, and Amal Chakraborty demanding immediate arrest of all miscreants involved in the attack.

Police said that after the clash, a large number of security forces were deployed in the locality and an investigation has been launched against the accused persons.
