African Swine fever toll in Mizoram crosses 2,600 as virus grips four districts

Aizawl, Apr 21 (UNI) The resurgence of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Mizoram continues to take a heavy toll, with 136 pig deaths reported across four districts on Monday alone, pushing the total death count this year to 2,663, officials from the state Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department confirmed.
Southern Mizoram's Siaha town, which shares a border with Myanmar, was the worst hit, with 88 pig deaths recorded across 21 localities. Lawngtlai town, also a border district adjoining both Myanmar and Bangladesh, reported 43 deaths in four localities.
Lunglei town, near the Myanmar border, saw four pig deaths in two localities, while Zawlnuam town in Mamit district, which borders Tripura and Bangladesh, registered one death.
So far, the ASF outbreak has affected 44 localities in urban areas of the four districts, although rural regions remain untouched, officials said. The fresh wave of infections was officially confirmed through lab tests conducted in Guwahati on March 20, following unusual pig deaths in Lawngtlai and Mamit districts earlier that month.
Meanwhile, eight pigs were culled on Monday—seven in Siaha and one in Mamit—taking the total number of pigs culled in the current outbreak to 881.
