Los Angeles, Apr 14 (UNI) British actress Aimee Lou Wood blasted the Saturday Night Live (SNL) parody of her character in the black-comedy-thriller series ‘White Lotus’, which mocked her wide-gap teeth, calling the spoof “unfunny” and “mean”.
Wood expressed her frustration and disappointment with the SNL parody, which aired on April 12, on her Instagram account, calling SNL out for its “cheap” portrayal of her character, Chelsea.
As reported by Variety, she wrote “Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple of weeks ago.” She added “Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about- but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”
The April 12 episode of the popular American late night -live action -comedy sketch - series featured a pre-taped spoof of creator Mike White’s HBO drama series, which starred Sarah Sherman as a parodied version of Wood’s character, Chelsea.
The sketch in question was mostly taking a dig at US President Donald Trump’s administration, and his global tariffs. It starred James Austin Johnson as the president, Chloe Fineman as Melania Trump, Mikey Day as Donald Trump Jr. and Jon Hamm as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
In one moment, Hamm’s RFK, dressed as actor Walton Goggins’ character Rick from the series, said “I’ve been having these insane ideas, like what if we took all the fluoride out of the drinking water? What would that do to people’s teeth?” The camera then revealed Sherman’s version of Wood’s character Chelsea, sporting an exaggerated accent and enlarged false teeth, who proceeded to respond in an extra-flamboyant way, “Fluoride? What’s that?”
The ’Sex Education’ actress said she was "not thin skinned" and understood that SNL was about "caricature".
"But the whole joke was about fluoride," she wrote on Sunday. "I have big gap teeth not bad teeth."
"The rest of the skit was punching up," Wood added, "and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on".
Wood wrote that she received “thousands of messages” of support after posting her gripes with the late-night sketch show, and later revealed that she even received “apologies from ‘SNL.'”
