Amritsar, Mar 17 (UNI) The main accused in the recent grenade attack on a temple in Punjab's Amritsar was killed in a police encounter on Monday morning after a brief exchange of fire, police said.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Monday that acting on specific intelligence, the Commissionerate Police Amritsar decisively tracked down those responsible for the grenade attack on the temple by Thakur in Khandwala, Amritsar on March 15.
An FIR under the Explosive Substances Act was registered at police station Chheharta and the accused were identified following intelligence inputs, he said.
Police teams tracked down the suspects in Rajasansi, the DGP said. He said that the accused fired at the police party, in which Head Constable Gurpreet Singh was injured and one bullet hit the turban of Inspector Amolak Singh. Acting in self-defence, the police party retaliated in which one of the accused was injured, he said. He was rushed to the civil hospital where he later died. The other accused fled, and efforts are on to arrest them.
DGP Yadav said a fresh FIR was being lodged at the airport police station.
