Anganwadi children will get uniform every year in Bihar

Patna, July 1 (UNI) In a major initiative aimed at strengthening early childhood care and women’s empowerment, around 52 lakh children aged 3 to 6 years, enrolled across 1,15,009 Anganwadi centres in Bihar, will now receive two sets of uniforms annually.
For this a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society (JEEViKA) and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) under the Department of Social Welfare.
On the occasion, Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar announced that sewing machine centres will be established across all 534 blocks of the state.
He highlighted that since 2006, over 20 lakh JEEViKA members, referred to as Didis, have become Lakhpati Didis (women earning over Rs 1 lakh annually). Currently, 48,232 women own their sewing machines, and 92,608 were working on sewing machines across Bihar.
Social Welfare Minister Madan Sahni said the government envisions the day when JEEViKA Didis will use over 1 lakh meters of cloth to stitch uniforms for children. He also mentioned that the same group will soon be tasked with preparing sarees for over one lakh Anganwadi Sevikas and Sahayikas (workers and helpers).
Social Welfare Department Secretary Vandana Preyasi added that earlier, Rs 250 was allocated per child for uniforms, which was later increased to Rs 400. Now, with the new arrangement, JEEViKA Didis will sew and supply the uniforms directly. This initiative will not only enhance the appearance of Anganwadi centres but will also provide seasonal (summer and winter) clothing, improving both care and rural livelihoods, she added.
Rural Development Department Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh said the uniform stitching initiative will empower JEEViKA Didis economically, generating a turnover exceeding Rs 200 crore. He noted that if needed, Didis can also access loans from their group-linked banks, enabling doorstep employment opportunities. UNI RS SSP
