AP: APWC condemns disparaging comments against women by a journalist

Vijayawada, June 9 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Women Commission Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja vehemently condemned the disparaging comments made by a veteran journalist in a debate conducted by the Sakshi news channel, owned by former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s family.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Rayapati Sailaja warned of stringent action against those who made disgraceful comments against women. She demanded Sakshi TV channel directors Y S Bharati and Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy for an open apology for humiliating women in the TV debate.

It may be mentioned here that during a TV debate two days ago, veteran journalist Krishnam Raju commented that the capital region Amaravati had become the capital of prostitutes and spoke in a manner that the women living there are prostitutes which caused protests across the state and cited a news items which was published in a national English daily

The police arrested Kommineni Srinivasa Rao, the anchor of Sakshi TV, who conducted the debate on the Sakshi news channel, in Hyderabad on Monday and he was brought to Vijayawada as cases under the SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act were registered against him in Amaravati. Meanwhile, veteran journalist Krishnam Raju, who passed disparaging comments against capital region women, is absconding.

Meanwhile, a group of women staged a dharna in front of Sakthi office here on Monday. They raised slogans against the Sakshi media house and demanded an apology from the Sakshi media house MD YS Bharati.

Chennai, June 9 (UNI) Filing of nominations for the June 19 biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from the Tamil Nadu Assembly ended on Monday and all the six official candidates--three from the ruling DMK, one from its ally, the MNM of actor-politician Kamal Haasan and two from the principal Opposition AIADMK--are set to be elected unopposed on June 12 after the last date for withdrawals, though 13 candidates have filed entered the fray.
