AP: Rate payers seek relief in high property tax rates

Kakinada, Apr 27 (UNI) The Rate payers association has appealed to the Andhra Pradesh government to provide further relief to the people, by repealing the Municipal Amendment Act 44/2020 and Government Order 198 that enables 15 percent increase in property tax every year.
Rate payers led by President of the `Citizens Initiative’ organisation Duvvuri Subrahmanyam, who is also a senior BJP leader, called on the Municipal Commissioner Bhavana Vasista and gave her a representation on the undue hike in property tax.
They sent a representation to the Minister for Municipal Administration Ponguri Narayana through the Commissioner requesting for immediate action keeping in view the peoples' plight.
"The misdeeds of the past Jagan government are still haunting the people of Andhra Pradesh in the form of Municipal Amendment Act 44/2020 and Govt Order no 198 that enables 15 percent automatic hike in property tax every year on the basis of market value instead of the usual rental value," they said.
Under the amended act the property tax increases whenever government increases market value of the property.
"This method of calculation is highly illegal, illogical and irrational," they remarked. The president of the Citizens Initiative further explained that the previous government had not only increased property tax at 15 % every year for the past five years but also indulged in another "exploitive method" by collecting 24% penalty on property tax even from those who paid property tax before the end of the financial year.
As a result of this draconian system, now the middle class people are forced to sell their properties and migrate.
"When it comes the plight of those residing in rented houses, they were forced to bear the higher rent as the house owners were left with no option but to lay the tax burden on them, increasing the rents every year."
"Hence it is high time that the Alliance government should repeal the GO and extend real relief to the people as promised," he added.
