Assam's oil township witnesses bandh after a long time

Guwahati, May 23 (UNI) Assam's oil township, Duliajan came to a complete halt on Friday in response to a dawn to dusk bandh called by 12 student bodies and civil society organisations demanding fulfillment of their various demands.
Several students' bodies and civil society organisations including the Tai Ahom Students' Union, All Assam Tea Tribe Students' Association and many others set a deadline of 24 hours to fulfill their demands and called for a bandh from 5 am to 5 pm on Friday as a mark of protest.
Assam police arrested Shrikhal Chaliha, head of the Bir Lachit Sena, who was on his way to Duliajan to support the agitation called by the different organisations.
The organisations were demanding immediate action against certain individuals who had recently desecreted the statue of Gopinath Bardoloi, the state's first Chief Minister, drawing public ire in the regiob.
The organisations were also seeking swift action against the owner of a petrol pump, who has lodged a complaint against former student leader Shankarjyoti Baruah, leading to his arrest.
The student bodies were also pressing for action against police officials who had handcuffed the former student leader, while he was being taken to the police station and the court.
The bandh assumes significance considering that the Gauhati High court had in 2019 imposed a ban on calling bandhs etc across the state.
Hearing a PIL, the Gauhati High court banned calling of bandhs and asked the Assam government to institute a bandh loss compensation fund. The court had also directed the police to lodge FIR against the organisations which call bandhs hampering daily life and business of the citizens.
Although Assam used to be known as a state experiencing a large number of bandhs and blockades since the 1980s, the state has witnessed less number of bandhs and blockades since the 2019 order of the Gauhati High court. UNI AS SSP
