Awami League strongly rejects ban on its activities, hits out against 'fascist' Yunus regime

Dhaka, May 11 (UNI) The Awami League has rejected as "illegal and unconstitutional" the ban on its activities by the Interim Government of Bangladesh, and said it proves that the “fascist” Yunus regime is seeking to turn the country “into a fertile ground for anti-liberation forces and extremist groups.”
In a statement, the party said the very party under whose leadership Bangladesh achieved independence and emerged as a sovereign state has now had its activities banned by an unelected, anti-democratic, fascist government devoid of public mandate.
“To ban the activities of the Awami League in Bangladesh means to exile the spirit, ideals, and core values of the Liberation War, and to empower the vulgar resurgence of anti-independence elements.
“We strongly reject this decision by the fascist dictator Yunus regime with utter contempt, and we vehemently protest against it.
It also said that the Bangladesh Awami League “will continue to conduct its activities in due course, disregarding this authoritarian decision”.
The Bangladesh Awami League is the oldest and most traditional political organisation in this land, with a history spanning 75 years, and it remains the trusted institution of the masses.
“From the language movement to independence, the Awami League has played a leading role in all of the Bengali nation’s major achievements. It has led every movement for the democratic rights of the people of Bangladesh. The history and existence of Bangladesh are intertwined with the Awami League. To seek the banning of its activities is to deny the nation’s history and heritage.
“Only anti-state and anti-liberation elements could take such a decision.”
It said the people of Bangladesh “will raise their voices on the streets in support of the Awami League, defying this decision, because the Awami League has always been uncompromising in securing the rights of the people. The bond between the Awami League and the people is genuine and deep-rooted”.
The party called upon democratic states, institutions, and leaders around the world who are committed to democratic values to denounce this heinous decision by the illegal, unconstitutional, and anti-democratic Yunus regime.
“This fascist government has made this move in an attempt to suppress the people's freedom of speech and solidify its unlawful grip on power. The conspiratorial group that has forcibly seized control has no respect for democratic norms and does not believe in peaceful transfer of power through elections,” it said.
“We strongly believe that the people of Bangladesh will deliver a resounding response to this reckless decision by the fascist Yunus regime. We call upon all leaders and activists of Awami League to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people and build a total resistance against this incoherent and anti-people decision,” it said.
