Bangladesh’s hardline Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami wins appeal for political re-registration

Dhaka, June 1 (UNI) In a political and legal victory, the Bangladesh – Jamaat -e-Islami (BJI) has regained its political certification after winning its appeal for re-registration at the Appellate Division of the country’s Supreme Court, more than a decade after it was banned.
The controversial ruling also overturned the High Court’s 2013 ruling, directing the Bangladesh Election Commission to officially register the hardline Islamic party for participation in national polls.
BJI chief Ameer Shafiqur Rahman welcomed the decision, calling it “rightful return to place”, reports Business Standard BD.
"By a unanimous verdict of the Appellate Division, the highest court of the country, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami regained its registration. We give thanks to Allah, Al-hamdulillah," said Shafiqur Rahman in an official statement.
"After more than a decade of legal struggle, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, as a party, has today regained its rightful place. Through this verdict, another injustice and oppression has ended. We are satisfied with this verdict of the Appellate Division," he added.
Noting that the party had previously participated in national elections with the Scale (Daripalla) symbol, maintaining due process both before and after the enactment of the Political Party Registration Rules in 2008, he said "Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami had significant representation in all participatory national elections.
The hardline Islamic party was banned in 2013 by a writ petition of the High Court due to its opposition to the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971, and its extremist ideology, as the party did not condemn the infamous Razakars, who were responsible for the Bengali genocide 50 years ago.
In accordance with the petition, the Election Commission scrapped the party’s certificate, though it continued to receive backing from Islamic clerics and radicals.
"We once again express our gratitude to Almighty Allah. We sincerely thank all the learned lawyers and well-wishers who assisted us throughout this long legal process," Shafiqur Rahman said.
He added, "Today's verdict has ensured justice and created an opportunity for the people to exercise their right to vote. We hope that through this verdict, the politics of Bangladesh will gain a new dimension, Insha'Allah."
Further complicating this already controversial issue, the verdict also follows the recent acquittal and release of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, previously sentenced to death for 1971 war crimes. According to Jamaat's legal team, the latest ruling removes all legal barriers to the party's participation in national polls.
One of the country’s principle political parties, the BJI has been shrouded in controversy since its inception, due to its hardline and conservative stance. Its return to the political scene signals the growing Islamism in Bangladesh, as its secular-plural and inclusive nature continues to deteriorate.
While the Bangladesh Nationalist Party – the country’s leading party after the Awami League – had allied itself with the BJI amid the installation of the interim govt in 2024, the BNP has since then distanced itself from the group.
