Bidar cane farmers up in arms over payment delay

Bidar (Karnataka), June 14 (UNI) Sugarcane farmers in Bidar are protesting against sugar mills and district authorities for failing to pay dues that have been pending for several months. Despite supplying their crop long ago, farmers have not received any payment, causing severe financial distress.
The protests reflect a wider crisis across Karnataka, where mills have delayed payments in violation of the legal 15-day payment mandate. Farmers have warned of intensifying their agitation, including possible road and highway blockades, if immediate action is not taken.
On Saturday, hundreds of farmers staged demonstrations in Bidar, alleging that despite a bumper crop and timely supply to sugar mills during the last crushing season, not a single rupee has been credited to their accounts even after six months.
The farmers, backed by local unions and leaders, said the situation has pushed them into crisis, affecting their ability to pay for their children’s education, hospital expenses, and other essential needs.
"Our lives revolve around sugarcane. Yet, six months have passed without payment. The law clearly states that dues must be paid within 15 days, with interest for any delay. But neither the mill owners nor the administration has followed the rules," said one farmer.
Farmer leaders emphasised that they are not seeking charity, but demanding their rightful dues. “We are considering stronger measures. If necessary, we’ll block roads or highways. A final decision will be taken after consultations,” a senior farmer leader stated.
The farmers called on the state government to intervene immediately and ensure that the sugar mills comply with legal provisions and clear all pending payments with applicable interest.
