BJD demands impartial investigation on deaths of six patients in a single day at SLNMCH

Bhubaneswar, June 4 (UNI) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday demanded an impartial investigation and the issuance of a white paper regarding the deaths of six patients in a single
day at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH) in Koraput.
Describing the incident as a serious reflection of the deteriorating state of Odisha’s healthcare system, the party’s General Secretary Bhrugu Baxipatra, Koraput District BJD President Jhina Hikaka, and former MLA Raghuram Padal held the State Government accountable for these
tragic deaths.
The BJD leaders expressed grave concern over the deaths, demanding strict action against those responsible.
Addressing a joint press conference, the BJD leaders said that five patients in the ICU and one in the general ward died within 24 hours, reportedly due to medical negligence.
They highlighted that residents of Koraput often have to rely on neighbouring Andhra Pradesh for medical treatment.
However, former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had established Saheed Laxman Nayak Government Medical College to serve the region.
The BJD leaders said that despite the BJP government’s claims of delivering results within a year, this tragic incident exposed the health department’s negligence and mismanagement.
Baxipatra stated that such a sensitive incident has not only disheartened the patients and their families but has also sparked public demand for transparency regarding the true cause of the
deaths.
Koraput District BJD President Jhina Hikaka and former MLA Raghuram Padal called for an investigation to identify those responsible for this alleged case of medical malpractice. They warned that unless the culprits are punished, people—particularly in the tribal-dominated region—will lose faith in the government-run healthcare system.
