BJP-MNF-Congress front stakes claim to topple ZPM in Lai Council

Aizawl, Apr 23 (UNI) In a dramatic political twist, a new alliance comprising 13 MDCs (members of district council)—11 from the Mizo National Front (MNF), two from the BJP, and the lone Congress member—has staked claim to form the next executive committee in the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC), threatening to unseat the two-month-old Zoram People's Movement (ZPM)-led administration.
The coalition, led by BJP member N. Zangura, met Governor Lt Gen (Retd) V.K. Singh at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday evening, parading their strength in numbers. “We have the support of the majority. The Governor has assured swift action, and we are confident of forming the next executive committee soon,” said Zangura, who was recently appointed leader of the joint legislature party formed earlier in the day.
The surprise move follows closely on the heels of Tuesday’s passage of the 2025–2026 LADC budget and the unopposed election of a new Deputy Chairman—developments that took place without the ZPM administration facing a trust vote, as directed by the Governor in a February 24 notification. The budget was passed under the leadership of Chief Executive Member (CEM) V. Zirsanga, despite concerns over the council’s legitimacy.
Earlier on Wednesday, 11 MNF and two BJP MDCs met at Aijal Club and formed a joint front, electing Zangura as their leader. Both Zangura and fellow BJP MDC Tuturu Singh were formerly aligned with the ZPM executive, where they served as adviser and deputy chief whip respectively. Their defection was instrumental in tilting the balance of power.
The sole Congress MDC, former CEM C. Lalmuanthanga, also declared support for the MNF-BJP combine, giving the new alliance a clear edge. If the ZPM-led executive is toppled, it would mark the fourth such upheaval during the tenure of the current 11th LADC.
Political instability has dogged the LADC ever since Zirsanga first wrested control from the MNF-Congress coalition in August 2021, following a brief stint of Governor’s Rule from March 15 to late May that year. The current term has been punctuated by shifting loyalties, legal entanglements, and razor-thin margins.
Zirsanga’s leadership was already under strain after his January 2024 conviction in a corruption case, where he was sentenced to four years in prison and fined Rs 4 lakh. Although he briefly resigned ahead of a no-confidence motion in March 2024, his faction clung to power due to a deadlock—with both camps locked at 12 MDCs each after a key member resigned upon being elected MLA.
The LADC, comprising 25 elected and 4 nominated members, is due for general elections by November. With Wednesday’s political realignment, the council once again finds itself teetering on the brink of change, as Mizoram’s southernmost autonomous body continues to battle its reputation for instability.
