BJP picks Kanad Purkayastha for Rajya Sabha from Assam, keeps alliance with AGP intact

Guwahati, June 7 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday named Kanad Purkayastha, the party's Assam state secretary, as its official candidate for one of the two Rajya Sabha seats from the state.
The party’s Central Election Committee approved his candidature, a press release stated.
Purkayastha hails from the Barak Valley and belongs to a family with political roots in Assam.
He is the son of Kabindra Purkayastha, a veteran BJP leader and former Union minister who played a role in establishing the party’s footprint in the state during the 1990s and early 2000s.
The announcement comes as part of the BJP’s broader seat-sharing strategy with its regional ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
The two Rajya Sabha seats becoming vacant were previously held by the BJP and the AGP, and both parties have decided to retain one seat each in the upcoming elections.
The elections and vote count for the two Rajya Sabha seats will take place on June 19.
With the BJP-led alliance in Assam commanding a majority in the state assembly, both Purkayastha and the yet-to-be-announced AGP nominee are expected to sail through comfortably.
