BJP questions Cong on Mekedatu, Almatti projects

Bengaluru, June 2 (UNI) Karnataka BJP leader R Ashoka on Monday accused the Congress government of failing to allocate funds for the crucial Mekedatu and Almatti irrigation projects, while also alleging misuse of taxpayers’ money by disbursing crores to party workers instead of honouring welfare commitments.
Addressing the media, Ashoka said the decision to raise the height of the Almatti dam has already been finalised by the Central Government and dismissed Maharashtra’s interference in the matter. “We are not constructing a new dam but raising the existing Almatti dam,” he clarified.
Turning to the Mekedatu project, Ashoka challenged Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar’s readiness to meet the Central Government, asking, “How much money have you allocated in the budget for raising Almatti or for the Mekedatu schemes?”
He answered his own question: “Nothing. There are no funds for irrigation or water resource development.”
Highlighting Karnataka’s irrigation and agriculture needs, Ashoka said, “If Congress is serious about these projects, we are even ready to protest outside Stalin’s house in Chennai. Are you ready, Mr. Shivakumar?”
Ashoka also took aim at the state government’s financial management, accusing it of misusing public funds. “The government promised Rs 2,000 per month to Below Poverty Line families, but for the last three months, this guarantee has not been fulfilled,” he said.
Instead, Ashoka alleged, over Rs 7–8 crore of taxpayers’ money has been spent on Congress party workers.
“This is a gross misuse of public funds, especially when Karnataka is facing a financial crisis. Why prioritise party workers over public welfare?” he questioned.
