Cambodia detains 6,048 drug suspects, seizes 1.4 tons of illicit drugs in Q1

Phnom Penh, Apr 1 (UNI) Cambodia has seen a rise in the number of people arrested in drug cases, but a decline in the amount of narcotics seized in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, said an Anti-Drug Department (ADP)'s report released on Tuesday.
The authorities had apprehended 6,048 drug-related suspects during the January-March period this year, up 10 percent from 5,489 over the same period last year, the report said, adding that 192 suspects were foreigners of eight nationalities.
"A total of 1.4 tons of illicit drugs had been confiscated from those suspects in the Q1 of 2025," the report said.
The amount of seized drugs in Q1 this year dropped 61 percent from 3.65 tons in Q1 last year, the report added.
Most of the confiscated narcotics included ketamine, ecstasy, heroin, crystal methamphetamine, methamphetamine pills, cocaine, and cathinone.
The Southeast Asian nation has no death sentence for illicit drug traffickers. Under its law, those found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drugs could be imprisoned for life.
