Rio De Janeiro, Apr 2 (UNI) Veteran Argentine striker German Cano netted a first-half goal as Fluminense edged to a 1-0 away victory over Once Caldas in their Copa Sudamericana group stage opener on Tuesday.
Cano gave the Brazilian team the lead in the 31st minute with a looping 15-yard header while running away from the goal following Jhon Arias' cross.
The Colombian outfit had several chances to equalize in the second half but was denied by Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio, who made six saves.
Meanwhile, Victor Abrego and Diego Diellos scored second-half goals as Bolivia's Nacional Potosi registered a 2-0 home victory over Argentine club Independiente.
In Montevideo, defender Gustavo Vargas struck in the 91st minute as Paraguay's Guarani salvaged a 3-3 draw with Boston River.
Elsewhere, Union Santa Fe won 1-0 at home to Cruzeiro, Caracas FC prevailed 2-1 at Deportes Iquique, and Cienciano was held to a goalless home draw by Atletico Mineiro.
