Captain of cargo ship charged over deadly North Sea collision

London, Mar 15 (UNI) The captain of the cargo ship involved in the fatal collision in the North Sea has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter, media reports said on Friday.

According to BBC reports, Humberside Police confirmed that 59-year-old Vladimir Motin has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at Hull Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

One crew member remains missing and is presumed dead following the collision on Monday. A total of 36 people were rescued, with one individual taken to hospital.

The incident occurred near the coastal city of Hull and involved the U.S.-registered oil tanker Stena Immaculate and the Portuguese-flagged cargo vessel Solong, the report said.

Filipino national Mark Angelo Pernia, 38, has been named as the crew member of the Solong who is missing and presumed dead, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Frank Ferguson, head of the Crown Prosecution Service Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, said, "We have authorised Humberside Police to charge a Russian national in relation to a collision involving two vessels in the North Sea off the east coast of England."

Ferguson added, "The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against this defendant are now active and that he has the right to a fair trial.

"It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online that could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
