Catholic schools in Mizoram shut for a day to mourn Pope Francis' demise

Aizawl, Apr 22 (UNI) Catholic educational institutions under the Aizawl Diocese remained closed on Tuesday as a mark of mourning following the death of Pope Francis on Monday.
The closure was in accordance with a communiqué issued by Bishop Stephen Rotluanga, who announced a nine-day mourning period (Novemdiales) as directed by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI).
Bishop Rotluanga said the observance is in keeping with Catholic tradition following the passing of a pope. While schools and colleges closed for a day, other mourning rituals will continue for nine days.
During this period, institution and Vatican flags will be flown at half-mast, and portraits of the late Pope will be displayed in local churches and institutions. The faithful have been urged to recite the rosary or Divine Mercy chaplet daily for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul.
A special Requiem Mass will be held at Christ the King Cathedral in Kulikawn on the day of the Pope’s funeral. All priests, religious members, and the laity have been requested to attend the service at Mizoram’s oldest Catholic parish, constructed in 1927.
"As it falls within the Easter Octave, the Mass of the day will be celebrated with special prayers for the deceased. The name of the Pope will be omitted from Eucharistic prayers until a new pontiff is elected,” the Bishop stated.
Earlier, Bishop Rotluanga expressed deep sorrow over the Pope’s death, describing him as a spiritual father who led the global Church with humility, compassion, and a heart for the poor and marginalised.
