Ceasefire brings relief: HRTC resumes day bus services to border areas

Shimla, May 12 (UNI) With the ceasefire holding firm along the India-Pakistan border, transport services across North India have gradually returned to normal.
The resumption has come as a significant relief to commuters and tourists alike, especially in border-adjacent states like Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana.
Air, rail, and road connectivity have resumed in a phased manner, following the temporary suspension due to heightened tensions over the past week.
The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), a major public transport operator in the region, had suspended services on several sensitive routes including Jammu, Katra, Pathankot, Chamba, and Chandigarh after escalations along the international border and the Line of Control on May 7 and 8.
With the situation stabilising, the HRTC has now resumed day-time bus services on these routes, offering crucial connectivity for daily commuters and travelers.
HRTC Managing Director Dr. Nipun Jindal confirmed the restoration of services. “All routes that were suspended due to border tensions have now been normalised. Day services to Amritsar, Pathankot, and Jammu have resumed today,” he said. He added that night services will be reviewed based on passenger demand and security considerations.
In a significant operation, an HRTC bus recently brought back 103 students who were stranded in Jammu and Kashmir, showcasing the corporation's commitment to public service during uncertain times.
The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has also resumed its premium Volvo services, facilitating both domestic and international tourists. These services are playing a vital role in reviving tourism after a brief lull.
Thanks to pleasant weather and the weekend, popular tourist resorts in Himachal Pradesh witnessed a moderate but encouraging footfall.
The transport department has appealed to the public to prefer day-time travel for now, given the current security dynamics and lower night-time demand.
With all agencies monitoring the situation closely, the gradual return to normalcy reflects both improved ground conditions and effective coordination between civil and transport authorities.
