Congress leader urges Centre to enhance Arunachal's Parliamentary and Assembly representation

Itanagar, May 7 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh Congress leader and former state Minister Takam Sanjoy on Wednesday urged the Centre, the Delimitation Commission, and the Election Commission of India to enhance Arunachal Pradesh’s political representation by increasing its Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and Assembly seats.
The former MP suggested the state's current two Lok Sabha seats be raised to six, the sole Rajya Sabha seat to two, and the 60-member State Assembly to 90 seats.
Sanjoy called for constitutional amendments to facilitate this change, emphasising the importance of such a “revolutionary step” for the peace-loving people of the state.
He noted that successive governments, particularly the Congress-led central governments, had taken various political and socio-economic measures to uplift the indigenous population of Arunachal Pradesh through constitutional reforms.
Sanjoy lauded the peaceful and democratic transition of Arunachal into the Indian mainstream, recalling Rajiv Gandhi’s historic observation: “No stones thrown, no demonstrations on streets, no dharnas near secretariat and no bandh calls anywhere.”
The senior Congress leader argued that the current political representation is insufficient for a state with geostrategic importance, which shares international borders with China, Myanmar, and Bhutan.
Besides, the state has cultural diversity, is home to 26 major tribes and over 100 sub-tribes and ethnic groups; in addition to being the geographically largest state in Northeast India with low literacy rates, while ranking second-lowest in the country according to the 2011 Census.
He also pointed out that the state's socio-economic development has been stalled because of its historical status as a late starter.
To buttress his demand, Sanjoy mentioned the unanimous resolution passed by the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly on March 23, 1998, advocating an increase in Lok Sabha seats from 2 to 6 and Rajya Sabha seats from 1 to 2.
The demand emerges due to the recent constitutional amendment reserving 33% of seats for women in both Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. He further stated that population should not be the sole criteria for delimiting Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies in tribal belts owing to its unique and peculiar geo-political conditions.
Sanjoy urged the people of Arunachal, including elected representatives, political parties, civil society, and student organisations to join hands in support of this long-standing demand. He also announced plans to establish a permanent body to liaise with central authorities and mobilise democratic delegations to push for timely action from the Centre, the Election Commission, and the Delimitation Commission of India.
