Delimitation row : DMK, AIADMK trade barbs, Stalin says Census delay is no accident, a sinister design by BJP

Chennai, June 6 (UNI) As the proposed delimitation exercise by the Centre seemed to have
been dominating the political landscape as it would Tamil Nadu's Lok Sabha representation,
a war of words has erupted between the ruling DMK and the main Opposition AIADMK with
the former stoutly opposing and terming that the danger he had warned was now at the doorstep
and the latter accusing DMK of shedding crocodile tears on the issue to hide the failure of its
government.
Strong reiterating his opposition for delimitation based on present population as it would affect
the southern states, Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin, in a statement on Friday
evening said the Census delay (which the BJP Government pushed to 2027) is no accident.
"The delimitation plan is no coincidence. The danger I warned of is at our doorstep...Fair
Delimitation - Oraniyil TamilNadu (TN united in one front)", he said.
Pointing out that even if betrayers like the AIADMK crawl before the BJP for its political survival,
the people of Tamil Nadu led by the DMK will never allow the state to be punished for its progress,
Mr Stalin said.
He also stressed on his demand for a clear Parliamentary commitment and a suitable
Constitutional Amendment, as was decided at the JAC formed by Mr Stalin, who took
the lead in organising a meeting of Chief Ministers and leaders of several states, including
the southern states, that would be affected by the delimitation exercise, and formed the JAC.
Coming down heavily on the BJP and countering the AIADMK's accusations, he said there
was a sinister design in how the BJP-led Union Government is implementing the national
Census and the subsequent delimitation.
Developed states, especially in the non-Hindi speaking South, which followed population
control norms, will now be punished, while states that disregarded population control for
decades are set to gain more seats in Parliament, the Chief Minister said.
"This unfair shift skews the federal balance and rewards irresponsibility", he said.
Reiterating that he had already warned about this design, Mr Stalin said former Union
Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has now explained in detail how
this sleight of hand is unfolding.
"Time has come not just to be vigilant but to craft counter-strategies to safeguard the
South’s voice", he said.
"The 2027 Census will form the basis for the next delimitation, replacing the 1971 data",
he said and added that this gives the Union BJP Government the means to restructure
Parliamentary representation to its advantage, at the cost of the southern states.
"The Ministry of Home Affairs claims that the concerns of affected states will be addressed.
But these are vague remarks. What is needed is a clear parliamentary commitment and a
suitable constitutional amendment", he added.
Referring to abrogating oa Article 370 by the BJP government at the Centre, Mr Stalin said
Just look at what happened after Article 370 was abrogated.
The Union Government spoke of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Elections were
held. Assurances were given in the Supreme Court. Yet, Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union
Territory, he noted.
"This is the track record of BJP we are dealing with", Mr Stalin said, flaying the Centre in his
fresh salvo.
"If the Union Government proceeds with delimitation based on 2027 census, the democratic
power of peninsular India will be reduced to irrelevance", he cautioned.
"Even if betrayers like the ADMK choose to kneel before the BJP for their political survival, the
people of Tamil Nadu led by the DMK will never allow our state to be punished for its progress",
he asserted.
"Tamil Nadu will fight! Tamil Nadu will win!",he added.
