EGT clues could reveal fuel quality in air crash: Expert

Bengaluru, June 14 (UNI) Former NAL deputy director and aviation expert Saligram J Muralidhar on Saturday said that the key to understanding the recent aircraft crash lies in analysing the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT), a critical engine parameter that he believes has been largely overlooked.
He said this analysis could reveal evidence of fuel contamination, which may have caused the rare and alarming simultaneous failure of both engines.
"EGT must be the starting point of any serious investigation," Muralidhar told UNI in an interview. "This parameter, when correlated with inflated air pressure, tells us everything about combustion quality, fuel efficiency, and engine health. I don’t think anyone has yet highlighted this in the media or technical discussions — and that’s a serious gap."
EGT, or Exhaust Gas Temperature, reflects how well the engine is burning fuel. According to Muralidhar, abnormal EGT readings could be a tell-tale sign of impurities, degradation, or adulteration in the fuel — making it an indispensable diagnostic tool in this case.
"Fuel quality is the magic word here," he said. "EGT can uncover subtle but decisive signs of incomplete combustion that other parameters might miss. That’s why I say — examine the EGT data carefully, and you’ll find the real story."
The aviation expert connected this to a far more troubling aspect of the crash — the simultaneous failure of both engines, an extremely rare occurrence in modern aviation.
"This is not a standard engine-out scenario," he said. "Aircraft are designed to continue flying even if one engine fails. The simultaneous failure of both engines — systems that operate independently — is highly irregular and points to a single common factor: fuel."
Muralidhar ruled out bird strikes or physical engine damage, citing video and sensor data that showed no signs of sparks, smoke, or debris. "Everything was normal until both engines began to lose thrust. That pattern doesn’t match mechanical failure — it suggests a systemic issue, and fuel is the one common denominator," he explained.
He noted that modern aircraft are equipped with safeguards, including cross-feed systems, which ensure that even if one line is blocked or compromised, the other engine should continue functioning. "That both engines went out together suggests the fuel itself was unfit — whether due to contamination, degradation, or adulteration, the data must tell us," he added.
Muralidhar emphasised that his remarks were not speculative but grounded in engineering logic and flight diagnostics. "Let the agencies determine how and where this happened. The question of who is responsible can come later," he said.
His remarks come as aviation investigators begin examining data from the recovered Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). With EGT and fuel parameters now gaining attention, the probe may be heading in a new direction.
