Ensure transparency, wider use of tech in GST collection: Yogi

Lucknow, May 2 (UNI) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday directed for greater transparency, accountability and the use of advanced technology in the tax administration of Uttar Pradesh.
Chairing a review meeting of the State Tax Department, the CM emphasised the need to combat tax evasion and build a more efficient, taxpayer-friendly system that supports the state's economic goals.
He said that tax evasion is a national loss and it will not be tolerated under any circumstances. "Strict and well-planned action should be ensured to prevent tax evasion at the departmental level," he said.
According to figures presented at the meeting, the State Tax Department collected Rs 1,14,637.54 crore in the financial year 2024–25. For the current financial year 2025–26, a new target of Rs 1.75 lakh crore has been set.
In April, the first month of the new fiscal year, the department collected Rs 9,986.15 crore through GST and VAT, which Yogi described as satisfactory but said further improvement is needed in the coming months to meet the target.
He appreciated the performance of several zones, including Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ayodhya, Lucknow II, Aligarh, Kanpur I and Jhansi, which achieved over 60 percent of their monthly targets in April. Lucknow alone achieved 71.66 percent of its target.
However, the CM pointed out that some zones, corporate circles, and sectors, such as Varanasi, Etawah, Gorakhpur, Kanpur II and Agra, need to improve their performance.
He also mentioned that sectors in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Saharanpur and Jalaun must show better results. He directed the officials to prepare solid and regional action plans to ensure the achievement of set goals.
During a video interaction with Additional Commissioners, Yogi reviewed the performance and availability of officers and urged them to maintain consistent communication with local traders. He emphasised the importance of addressing field-level challenges and providing timely guidance on return filings and tax procedures.
Calling for stronger technical capacity within the department, he directed the officials to increasingly use IT tools, artificial intelligence and data analytics to not only enhance revenue collection but also ensure a more transparent and reliable tax system. He reiterated that the future of tax administration lies in simplification, digital empowerment and continuous dialogue with stakeholders.
The CM urged the department to align its efforts with the larger vision of UP's development, stating that effective revenue management is the foundation of sustained social and economic progress.
