Farmer shot at by Kuki militant in Manipur

Imphal, June 19 (UNI) A woman died in a cross-fire while a 60-year-old farmer sustained a critical bullet injury at Phubala in Manipur's Bishnupur district on Thursday, officials said.
The farmer was hit by a bullet fired by a suspected Kuki militant. In a follow up operation, an encounter ensued between combined forces and suspected Kuki militants and the woman died in cross firing.
The farmer injured in the firing by Kuki militants was identified as Ningthoujam Biren. He was undergoing treatment at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.
Some other farmers who were in the area said they heard several gunshots. They protested against the repeated attacks by Kuki militants on farmers, the recent one being the attack on farmers at Leitanpokpi, Imphal East by Kuki youths. The protestors said large numbers of central forces are stationed near areas where the Kuki militants were firing .
The farmers said they need to work now as it is the peak season or they will not have adequate rice for the next year. To protest the attack they blocked roads. They further said they took permission from the authority to carry out farming activities.

Leader of RPI (Athawale) , Mahesh Thounaojam said attacks on farmers are increasing in Manipur. MLA Thongam Shanti Singh said even after imposition of President’s Rule there is no positive development on the ground.
Meanwhile, the people of the area have resolved to start a stir if the Governor, Chief Secretary and Security Advisor don’t visit the site and ensure the safety of farmers and villagers.
A combined team of police and security personnel meanwhile launched an operation to nab the Kuki militants and an encounter ensued in Churachandpur district. A woman was hit in the encounter and she has succumbed to the injuries. UNI NS SSP
