Future new MSRTC buses will run on hybrid fuel: Minister Sarnaik

Mumbai, May 10 (UNI) Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will acquire 25,000 buses in the next five years at a rate of 5,000 every year, state Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said on Friday.
From 2025-26, the remaining 20,000 buses will run on diesel fuel hybrid with environmentally friendly fuels like CNG and LNG. Diesel fuel will be used only in emergency situations, so that bus passengers are not inconvenienced, informed Sarnaik.
He was speaking at a meeting of MSRTC officials and related fuel supplier organizations called regarding environmentally friendly fuel.
Minister Sarnaik said that almost all the buses of MSRTC run on diesel fuel. About 34 percent of the total expenditure of the corporation is spent on fuel. About 10.70 lakh liters of diesel are consumed daily. About 34,000 crore rupees are spent on fuel annually.
Considering the availability of diesel fuel in the future and the frequent changes in its price, it is necessary to use alternative fuels. CNG and LNG are alternative fuels that are relatively cheaper than diesel and are also environmentally friendly. Also, due to the good efficiency of this fuel, the bus covers a distance of 5-5.5 kilometers per liter.
However, on diesel fuel, the bus covers only 4 kilometers per liter. Naturally, using LNG and CNG fuel will help in saving on fuel costs and reducing pollution. The new 20000 buses to be purchased from next year will be hybrid fuel-powered, he added. UNI VKB SSP
