Gaza Health Ministry calls on UN to declare Gaza Famine Zone - Director

Gaza, May 2 (UNI) More than 90% of Gaza residents are facing critical food shortages, while another 65% do not have access to clean drinking water, Director General of the Gaza Health Ministry Munir al-Barash said, adding that the current situation allows the United Nations to recognize the Gaza Strip as a famine zone.
"About 91% of Gaza residents are facing critical food shortages, another 65% do not have access to clean drinking water. About 92% of children and nursing mothers suffer from acute food shortages, which poses a direct threat to their lives," al-Barash told the Anadolu news agency on Thursday, calling on the UN "to officially recognize the Gaza Strip as a famine zone."
On Thursday, the Gaza Health Ministry called on medical and humanitarian organizations, as well as activists around the world to hold a week-long campaign to support Palestinian children in the war zone. The ministry also called on medical institutions to send emergency medical teams, medicines, first aid and other health supplies to Gaza, and to pressure governments and international organizations to end the blockade of the enclave.
According to the health ministry, more than 2,300 people have been killed and more than 6,000 injured in Gaza since March 18.
On March 18, Israel resumed strikes on the Gaza Strip, citing Palestinian movement Hamas' refusal to accept the US plan to extend the ceasefire, which expired on March 1. Israel cut off electricity supply to a desalination plant in the Gaza Strip and closed off entry to trucks carrying humanitarian aid.
