General strike called in Manipur over security forces' action

Imphal, May 22 (UNI) Normal life was completely affected in Manipur due to a 48-hour general strike called to protest the security forces stopping a Manipur State Transport bus and demanding that the word Manipur be blacked out.
On May 20, a Manipur State Transport vehicle carrying journalists and officials to attend the Shirui Lily Festival was stopped by personnel of 4 Mahar Regiment.
The troops and other security personnel asked the government vehicle to black out the word Manipur written on it. The incident triggered a major backlash from all political parties including BJP, Congress, CPI etc, as well as the civil societies of Manipur.
Media organisations across the state and Nagaland also opposed the stoppage of a government vehicle carrying journalists to attend the festival at Ukhrul district.
To protest the act the COCOMI (Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity) imposed a 48-hour general strike, which began on Wednesday midnight and will conclude Friday midnight.
COCOMI has demanded an apology from the Governor and the resignation of the Chief Secretary, Security Advisor, and DGP (Director General of Police) of Manipur.
COCOMI said such an act dishonours a state and the sentiments of the people of Manipur. The general strike will not affect the Shirui Lily Festival or essential services.
All business establishments were shut down.
Roads were deserted. However movement of people towards Ukhrul district was not disturbed.
All educational institutes were also closed down. Examinations and other important events scheduled for May 22 and 23 were also cancelled.
Security was also beefed up to stop occurrence of any untoward incident.
