Ahmedabad, Mar 25 (UNI) Gujarat Titans (GT) scripted a new milestone in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday, smashing 16 sixes in their innings, surpassing their previous best of 14 sixes against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Ahmedabad in IPL 2023.
GT's batting onslaught saw them post 232/5, marking their highest total while chasing in IPL history. This also stands as their second-highest overall total, just behind the 233/3 they registered against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Ahmedabad in IPL 2023.
GT's power-hitting spree reflects a growing trend in modern T20 cricket, where aggressive batting and record-breaking totals have become increasingly common. Similar feats have been witnessed in T20 leagues worldwide. New Zealand's Finn Allen recently equalled the record for the most sixes in a T20 International innings, smashing 16 sixes during his explosive 137-run knock against Pakistan in Dunedin.
In IPL 2024, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders collectively hit a record 42 sixes in a match, with Punjab Kings alone smashing 24 in their successful chase of 262 at Eden Gardens.
High-scoring chases have also gained prominence, with South Africa successfully hunting down 259 against the West Indies in Centurion, powered by Quinton de Kock's century. Meanwhile, Middlesex pulled off a thrilling chase of 254 against Surrey in the Vitality T20 Blast. Zimbabwe recently set the all-time highest T20 International total, amassing 344/4 against Gambia, with captain Sikandar Raza leading the charge with an unbeaten 133 off 43 balls.
As T20 cricket continues to evolve, GT’s achievement in the IPL stands among these remarkable batting feats, highlighting the ever-growing emphasis on power-hitting and fearless run chases in the shortest format of the game. UNI BDN SSP
