Gulveer misses World Championship mark by 0.22s

San Juan Capistrano (USA), Mar 30 (UNI) India's Gulveer Singh delivered a stunning performance at The Ten 2025 athletics meet, setting a new men’s 10,000m national record while narrowly missing the automatic qualifying mark for the World Athletics Championships 2025 by just 0.22 seconds.
The 26-year-old Indian athlete clocked an impressive 27:00.22s at the J Serra Catholic High School track on Sunday, finishing sixth in a highly competitive field. His new mark improved upon his previous national record of 27:14.88, which he had set at the Hachioji Long Distance 2024 event in Japan, shaving off a remarkable 14.66 seconds.
The race was won by Ishmael Kipkurui, who clocked 26:50.21 to break the NCAA record. Habtom Samuel secured second place with 26:51.06, while Adrian Wildschutt finished third in 26:51.27. The Ten is classified as a World Athletics Continental Tour silver-level meet.
Despite missing the automatic entry mark of 27:00.00 for the World Athletics Championships by the narrowest of margins, Gulveer comfortably surpassed the entry standard for the Asian Athletics Championships 2025, which stands at 29:33.26, as determined by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). However, his selection for the continental championships, scheduled in Gumi, Republic of Korea, will be subject to AFI’s discretion.
With this performance, Gulveer is now ranked third among the fastest Asian runners in the 10,000m event, trailing only Qatar’s Ahmad Hassan Abdullah and Nicholas Kemboi.
Notably, Gulveer had first broken the 10,000m national record at The Ten in 2024, clocking 27:41.81 to surpass Surendra Singh’s long-standing record of 28:02.89 from 2008. He further improved it later that year in Japan.
A bronze medallist in the 10,000m at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023, Gulveer also holds the Indian national record in the 5000m. Earlier this year, he set new national marks in the men’s 3000m indoor event and the Asian 5000m short track event in Boston.
Meanwhile, at the same meet, Ankita Dhyani bettered her personal best in the women's 1500m, clocking 4:13.97, an improvement from her previous best of 4:16.20.
