Haze over Himachal; hailstorm alert in high reaches

WEATHER -HAILSTROM WARNING
Shimla, April 19(UNI) Clouds and haze shrouded the Himachal Pradesh skyline from Friday evening, as a shallow layer of mist settled over towns from Chamba to Shimla.
According to local Met office, humidity and lingering haze would give way to increasingly overcast skies on Saturday night, with scattered showers likely to develop in lower valleys.
“In the high mountain reaches of Lahaul‑Spiti, Kullu, Chamba and Kangra, snow or rain‑snow mixed precipitation is expected, especially above 2,500 meters, making passes slippery by dawn,” weather office said.
A spokesperson for the Himachal Pradesh SDMA warned of intermittent heavy rains and hailstorms from the night of April 18 until midnight of April 19.
Chamba, Kangra and Kullu districts face the greatest risk of intense rainfall on Saturday night, while Mandi may see similar activity throughout April 19.
Hailstorms could strike pockets of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi and Shimla districts, posing hazards to unprotected crops, livestock and parked vehicles.
The sudden weather shift has already begun to disrupt daily life. Around 4:30 am Saturday, a local resident alerted authorities to a mudslide roughly 500 meters before Dhandhal Nallah on the Udaipur side.
Debris has completely blocked the roadway, stranding early morning commuters and forcing school buses to reroute.
Further afield, the SKTT road at 74 km has been washed out by a flash flood, according to Lahaul‑Spiti police from Tindi outpost.
“The floodwaters overturned a section of the embankment, rendering the route impassable,” the advisory read, adding that clearance and repair work will begin tomorrow morning.
Travelers are strongly advised to avoid non‑essential travel through the affected corridors until crews restore safe passage.
Residents should secure loose objects outdoors, cover vulnerable crops and keep emergency supplies — lanterns, bottled water and blankets — on hand.
With temperature dips overnight, authorities also caution motorists to watch for black ice on high‑altitude stretches and to carry snow chains if venturing above 2,000 meters.
