HBL Engineering gets Kavach contracts worth Rs 762 crore

New Delhi, March 31 (UNI) HBL Engineering on Monday said Central Railway has awarded five letters of acceptances (LoAs) to the company for provision of the automatic train protection system Kavach.
The total value of the five contracts (inclusive of 18% GST) is 762.56 crore.
"We also would like to inform the stakeholders that the total value of all the Kavach contracts to date (during the year) is Rs 3,618 crores," HBL Engineering said in a stock exchange filing.
The company said that the five contracts for the indigenously developed anti-collision system would cover a total of 3,900 kms across 413 railway stations.
Time to complete each of the five contracts is 18 months.
Kavach is a highly technology intensive system, which requires safety certification of highest order (SIL-4). The system aids the loco pilot in running of trains within specified speed limits by automatic application of brakes in case the loco pilot fails to do so and also helps the trains to run safely during inclement weather.
As per Ministry of Railways, the cost for provision of track side including station equipment of Kavach is approximately Rs 50 lakhs per kilometre and cost for provision of Kavach equipment on locomotives is approximately Rs 80 lakhs per loco.
The latest version of Kavach is planned for large-scale deployment over the Indian Railways network.
Currently, three OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are approved for supply of Kavach systems. To increase capacity and scale of implementation, trials and approval of more OEMs are at different stages.
The Railways has finalised the project to equip 10,000 locomotives with Kavach system. Additionally, bids have been invited for trackside works of Kavach covering about 15,000 RKm out of which contracts for 1,865 RKm have already been awarded.
