Himachal: 140 juvenile diabetics registered in Tanda Medical College

Kangra, Mar 25 (UNI) Type 1 Diabetes has become more prevalent among children in Himachal Pradesh, with 140 such cases registered in Dr Rajender Prasad Govt. Medical College Tanda alone, authorities said on Tuesday.
Eight children have been selected for insulin pumps, which cost nearly Rs. 3 lakhs, and four children were put on such pumps during the day.
Often children die because of difficulty in diagnosis and sudden deterioration in their health condition.
Dr. Milap Sharma, Principal, Dr. Rajender Prasad Govt. Medical College Kangra at Tanda, who is also a pediatrician, told UNI that 140 such Type 1 diabetic children from different districts of Himachal Pradesh are under treatment in the medical college.
He said these children have come here from Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, Hamirpur, Una, Kangra and even from Pathankot of Punjab.
Dr. Atul Gupta, Paediatric Endocrinologist, said up till now the cure is only insulin. The new mode of treatment is insulin pumps which deliver insulin to Type 1 Diabetes children.
Expressing concern, he said Type 1 Diabetes patients are increasing in Himachal Pradesh. He said around 140 patients with Type 1 Diabetes are being treated in the hospital. UNI AR SSP
