Himachal: After inclement weather, mercury remains below normal at night, normal in the days

Shimla, May 12 (UNI) After nearly ten days of unsettled weather, Himachal Pradesh experienced scattered rainfall and thunderstorms on Sunday night, with gusty winds sweeping across districts like Kangra, Shimla, and Sundernagar.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), wind speeds peaked at 57 km/h in Reckong Peo while several mid and high hill regions recorded light rain
In Bharmaur of Chamba had 10 mm rain, Kandaghat in Solan 8mm, hill station Kasauli 3.4 mm. The tourist resort Shimla and Kufri, 2.0 mm each. Kukumseri in Lahaul Spiti 1.9 mm, Kothi in Kullu 1.8 mm, Neri 1.5 mm Dharampur 1.4 mm and Una, Manali, Dalhousie, Pandoh one mm each.
Shimla, Sundernagar, Kangra were affected by thunderstorm and Reckong Peo of Kinnaur hit by 57 km/h gusty winds, Bajaura in Kullu 52 km/h, Seobagh and Kufri 44 km/h each, Tabo, 39 km and Narkanda and Hamirpur, 31 km/h each.
Although the plains remained largely insulated from heatwave conditions due to intermittent cloud cover, the IMD warns of a continued gradual rise in mercury.

Minimum temperatures across Himachal Pradesh was recorded lowest at Keylong at 4.7°C, followed by Kalpa (7.5°C) and Manali (11.9°C). Shimla reported 12.2°C, while mid-hill areas like Mandi (18.5°C), Solan (15.6°C), and Dharamshala (14.9°C) remained relatively mild.
The lower hills and plains saw higher from minimum with Bilaspur (21.4°C), Hamirpur (20.8°C), Sundernagar (20.3°C), and Una (18.6°C).
Notable departures from normal include Shimla at 2.4°C below normal, Dharamshala at 2.3°C below, and Jubberhatti, which was 2.4°C below normal.
Paonta Sahib, the state's hottest location yesterday, saw a maximum temperature of 38°C — close to normal but in a sign of the building heat in the lower hills and plains.

The maximum temperature across Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur may reach or cross the 40°C mark on Monday, accompanied by dry but partly cloudy skies. High-altitude areas such as Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur remained cooler, with Kukumseri recording the lowest minimum at 4.3°C.
As per the seven-day outlook, Himachal Pradesh is expected to witness largely dry conditions over the next few days, with only isolated spells of rain or thunderstorms mainly over mid and high hills.
A lull in major Western Disturbances means most areas will see clear to partly cloudy skies until the weekend, allowing temperatures to continue their upward climb.
Daytime highs are likely to rise by 3–4°C, while night temperatures may go up by 2–3°C during the week.
However, this dry phase may not last long. IMD forecasts indicate the possibility of a fresh Western Disturbance approaching the region by early next week.
This could revive rain and thunderstorm activity across several districts, especially over mid and high hills.
Farmers and residents are advised to stay updated and make necessary preparations as the pattern shifts again.
The brief break from intense weather will offer some respite, but rising temperatures also call for caution, particularly in low-lying areas susceptible to heat stress.
