Himachal: Teacher accused of slapping school student, police begin probe

Shimla, Mar 26 (UNI) A female teacher at Portmore School in this capital city of Himachal Pradesh is facing legal action after allegedly slapping a sixth-grade student.
The incident came to light following a complaint filed by the student’s mother at Chhota Shimla police station. The police have registered a case under Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, initiating a formal investigation.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred during a Sanskrit class on Monday. The teacher had instructed students to memorize the meanings of various words.
When she later questioned the students, many were unable to provide the correct answers. In response, the teacher reportedly directed the class monitor, a 10-year-old girl, to punish her classmates by slapping those who had given incorrect responses.
Frightened by the order, the young student followed the teacher’s instructions but delivered only light slaps. This reportedly angered the teacher, who then slapped the student hard and rebuked her, saying, “Is this how you slap? You are the class monitor, and you don’t even know how to slap properly.” According to the complaint, the teacher subsequently slapped two other students in the class as well.
When the victim returned home, she narrated the incident to her parents, following which her mother approached the police and filed a formal complaint. The police promptly registered a case and launched an investigation.
On Tuesday, a team from Chhota Shimla police station visited the school to gather information from the administration and staff. Preliminary findings revealed that the sixth-grade classroom is housed in an old building that does not have CCTV surveillance, making it difficult to obtain video evidence of the incident.
Police officials stated that they are completing the necessary legal formalities and will soon summon the accused teacher for questioning. The investigation aims to verify the claims made by the student and her mother, gather witness statements, and determine whether any additional disciplinary actions are required.
Meanwhile, the school administration has assured full cooperation with the authorities. The incident has sparked concerns among parents regarding student safety and discipline policies in educational institutions. UNI ML SSP
