HKong postal service suspends mail shipment to US - Statement

Beijing, Apr 16 (UNI) Hongkong Post is suspending the shipment of goods to the United States in response to the US decision to eliminate the duty-free "de minimis" treatment for items sent from Hong Kong to the US.
The postal service specified on Wednesday that the United States was going to increase the tariffs for postal items intended to be sent to the US starting from May 2.
"The US is unreasonable, bullying and imposing tariffs abusively. Hongkong Post will definitely not collect any so-called tariffs on behalf of the US and will suspend the acceptance of postal items containing goods destined to the US," Hongkong Post said in a statement.
Surface mail (land or sea) of US-bound items will be suspended starting April 16, while airmail will be suspended starting April 27.
"For sending items to the US, the public in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US's unreasonable and bullying acts. Other postal items containing documents only without goods will not be affected," Hongkong Post specified.
On April 2, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order introducing "reciprocal" tariffs on imports from other countries. The baseline rate is 10%. For a number of countries, increased rates were introduced on April 9, which were calculated based on the US trade deficit with a specific country - so that there would be a balance instead of a deficit.
