Hyd: CBI court sentences former K’taka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy to 7-year jail

Hyderabad, May 6 (UNI) The special CBI court here rpt here (eds correct) on Tuesday sentenced former Karnataka Minister and MLA Gali Janardhan Reddy and three others to seven years' imprisonment in the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) illegal mining case.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of the four convicted besides imposing Rs one lakh fine on the mining company.
Soon after the judgment, the CBI took all four convicts including Reddy into custody.
Those convicted include V.D. Rajgopal, then Director of Mines & Geology, Government of Andhra; Janardhan Reddy’s brother-in-law and Managing Director of OMC (Bellary) B.V. Srinivasa Reddy , and Janardhan Reddy's personal assistant Mefaz Ali Khan (the former partner of M/s Devi Enterprises, Bellary).
The investigation was initiated by the CBI in 2009, following a directive from the Central government at the request of the then Andhra Pradesh government.
The judgment was delivered by the CBI court nearly 14 years after the agency filed its first chargesheet on December 3, 2011 against the accused followed by three supplementary chargesheets naming nine accused, including IAS officer Srilakshmi, Gali Janardhan Reddy's personal assistant Mefaz Ali Khan, and former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy.
In the chargesheet, the CBI alleged that the accused in criminal conspiracy with each other committed offences of illegal mining of iron ore (in Bellary Reserve Forest area on the Karnataka-Andhra Pradesh border) by criminally trespassing into the Government lands and lands of other private persons and thus caused loss of more than Rs.800 Crore loss to the Government.
