Indian national detained in Doha; Indian Embassy in touch with family, Qatari authorities

New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) An Indian national, Amit Gupta, the Country Head at Tech Mahindra in Doha, has been detained by the Qatari authorities. The Indian Embassy is in touch with the family, the lawyer representing Gupta and the Qatari authorities, sources said.

“Our Embassy in Qatar is aware of the detention of Mr Amit Gupta, an Indian national, by Qatari

Authorities in relation to an ongoing investigation. Mission has been in touch with the family, the lawyer representing Mr Gupta and Qatari Authorities on a regular basis.

“Our Embassy continues to provide all possible assistance in the matter and is closely following the case,” the sources added.

According to reports, Amit Gupta, who hails from Vadodara, was picked up by the Qatari authorities on January 1.

He has been under detention by Qatar’s State Security.

His elderly parents are in a state of deep distress, while his wife has sought help from the PMO.

His father has reached out to Anand Mahindra, hoping for intervention. The family insists Amit is innocent and has been falsely accused of data theft, and have demanded urgent action for his release, a Vadodara news outlet said.

His elderly parents also reached out to Vadodara MP Hemang Joshi for help.

They say Amit was taken away on January 1 and held for 48 hours without food or water. After that, he was locked in a room, and it has been three months since they have heard from him.

His parents had also gone to Qatar and tried to meet him but were not allowed to, reports said.

The Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, visited India in February this year during which he held talks with Prime Minister Modi, and the two sides inked agreements in the fields of trade and mutual investments.

The case of Amit Gupta follows that of the detention of eight veteran Indian Naval Officers who were sentenced to death in Qatar in 2023, for alleged spying.

The eight Indian Navy veterans, working for Dahra Global company, were finally freed in February 2024, following intervention at the highest level.
