Justice Yashwant Varma transferred back to Allahabad HC amid controversy

New Delhi, Mar 28 (UNI) The central government on Friday notified the transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma back to his parent Allahabad High Court.
This move follows the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation on March 24, which stemmed from a major controversy after a fire at Justice Varma’s residence allegedly led to the discovery of a large amount of cash by firefighters.
The Collegium made its decision after convening two meetings—one on March 20 and another on March 24.
According to the report published on the Supreme Court website, the fire at Justice Varma’s house on March 14 inadvertently led to the recovery of unaccounted cash by firefighters. A video of the burnt cash was reportedly shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court which was uploaded on the Supreme Court website.
At the time of the incident, Justice Varma and his wife were in Madhya Pradesh, while only his daughter and elderly mother were present at home.
On March 21, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) initiated an in-house probe and constituted a three-member committee to investigate the allegations.
The Supreme Court has also published a report from the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on the matter, along with Justice Varma’s response.
Justice Varma, born in 1969, earned his LLB from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh and enrolled as an advocate in 1992. He previously served as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and as Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh.
He was designated as Senior Advocate in 2013 and appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court in October 2014. He was made a permanent judge in February 2017 before being transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he assumed office on October 11, 2021.
The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has opposed the transfer of Justice Varma to his parent court and is staging protests in this connection.
