Karan Singh in SMK Memorial Open quarterfinals

Bengaluru, Apr 3 (UNI) Karan Singh put up a gritty display to edge past Nikita Ianin in a tense three-setter on a rain-curtailed day at the SM Krishna Memorial Open at the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium here on Thursday.
With this hard-fought victory, Karan advanced to the quarterfinals, where he will face top seed Jay Clarke.
Karan, the highest-seeded Indian in the tournament, overcame a stern challenge from Ianin in a gripping encounter. The Russian qualifier made a strong start, claiming the first set 6-3. However, Karan mounted a comeback, breaking in the fifth game of the second set to gain a 5-2 advantage before levelling the match.
The decider saw both players holding serve until 5-5, when Karan capitalised on a crucial break in the 11th game to seal a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory in two hours and 17 minutes. The fifth seed will now look to avenge his defeat to Clarke at the M25 event in Ahmedabad last week.
Earlier, Clarke lived up to his billing as the top seed, easing into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kazakhstan’s Grigoriy Lomakin.
There was further joy for India as Aryan Shah, fresh off his title-winning run in Ahmedabad, secured a convincing win over compatriot SD Prajwal Dev. Aryan took the first set 6-3 with a double break and continued his momentum in the second, breaking in the first and fifth games to wrap up the match in 80 minutes.
Aryan will next face second seed Oliver Crawford, who overcame Sidharth Rawat 6-3, 7-6 (4) in their second-round fixture.
Chirag Duhan also booked his place in the quarterfinals after a marathon battle against Abhinav Sanjeev Shanmugam that lasted over two and a half hours. Abhinav took the opening set 6-4 and had a chance to close out the match in the second set, but Chirag staged a spirited fightback. The 21-year-old converted his sole break point to win the second set and then surged ahead in the third to triumph 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Manish Sureshkumar’s campaign ended following a 6-2, 7-6 (3) defeat to Maxim Zhukov. Japan’s Ryuki Matsuda also progressed after his opponent Nick Chappell retired midway. Matsuda won the first set 6-2 and was leading 3-0 in the second when Chappell pulled out.
Later in the evening, Raghav Jaisinghani will take on Ishaque Eqbal, vying for the final quarterfinal berth.
In the doubles draw, Adil Kalyanpur and Kody Pearson will face Parikshit Somani and Manish Sureshkumar, while Aryan Shah and Karan Singh will team up against Alexandr Binda and Nikita Ianin.
