Karnataka Congress MP slams PM Modi over Muslim contractors' reservation

Bengaluru, Apr 14 (UNI) Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain on Monday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for criticising the Karnataka government's decision to extend reservation benefits to Muslim contractors.
He accused the BJP of spreading misinformation and misrepresenting constitutional provisions for political ends.
Addressing the media here, Hussain asserted that reservation for backward communities in Karnataka is not a new concept and has existed since 1994, including under successive BJP governments. "The BJP is an expert in spreading lies, misinformation, and creating unrest in society. They never opposed these provisions while in power. It was only in the final days of their previous tenure that they attempted to scrap them," he said.
The Congress MP clarified that the matter is currently under judicial consideration. "The Supreme Court has not stayed the reservation, but merely halted the BJP government's attempt to do away with it. This is a progressive step aimed at inclusive development," he added.
"There are hardly any jobs left today. The Central government is not filling vacancies. If we want inclusive national progress, reservations must go beyond education and employment, and be extended to sectors like public contracts," Hussain said.
He explained that the Karnataka government had initially allowed reservations in public contracts up to ₹50 lakh, which was later increased to ₹1 crore and now ₹2 crore. This applies to all constitutionally recognised reserved categories, including SC, ST, and OBC groups.
The Rajya Sabha MP also accused the BJP of distorting facts to polarise voters. "They are using religion to divide the people, while our policy is to uplift all marginalised communities in line with constitutional principles," he stated.
Earlier, Modi, addressing a public meeting at Hissar in Haryana, alleged that the Congress was using reservation as a tool for appeasement. He said the Constitution provides for reservation to SCs, STs and OBCs, but Congress was now granting benefits on the basis of religion, which he claimed was unconstitutional.
"Appeasement has destroyed generations of Muslims. Only a few extremists have benefited, while the rest of the community has remained deprived of education and economic progress," the Prime Minister said.
While the BJP is pitching its legislative reforms as a corrective to years of appeasement, the Congress maintains that its policies aim at socio-economic inclusion of historically disadvantaged communities.
