Karnataka’s inflation highest in India: Vijayendra

Bengaluru, Mar 18 (UNI) Karnataka BJP State President Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Tuesday warned that the state's total debt is projected to surpass ₹9 lakh crore by 2027-28, with interest payments alone exceeding ₹60,000 crore.
He further highlighted that Karnataka currently has the highest inflation rate in the country at 5.03 per cent, far above Maharashtra (3.39 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (4.02 per cent), and Gujarat (3.88 per cent).
Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, Vijayendra criticised the Congress government for its failure to implement measures to curb the mounting debt and highlighted the alarming financial trajectory the state is on.
He pointed out that 80 per cent of the state budget is allocated to committed expenditures, leaving minimal resources for developmental projects. He warned that by the end of the 2025-26 financial year, the state government will be burdened with an interest payment of ₹45,600 crore.
Regarding economic growth, Vijayendra observed a sharp decline in Karnataka’s GDP growth rate. Under the previous BJP government in 2022-23, the state’s GDP growth was 14.2 per cent. However, under the Congress regime in 2023-24, it has fallen to 9.6 per cent, raising concerns about the state's economic slowdown and stagnation in industrial progress.
The BJP leader also criticised the state budget, stating that it has failed to address the concerns of various sections of society, including farmers, the poor, women, and youth. He accused the Congress government of neglecting priority sectors such as education and healthcare, further aggravating the state's financial deficits.
Additionally, Vijayendra pointed out that the budget does not provide adequate support to working class communities, including Madivala, Savita Samaj, weavers, and Vishwakarma communities. He accused the Congress government of betraying these communities despite coming to power under the "Ahinda" banner, which represents backward classes, Dalits, and minorities.
He urged the state government to take immediate corrective measures to stabilise Karnataka’s financial health and prioritise economic development over populist schemes. UNI BDN SSP
