Kerala aims to complete 'antibiotic literacy' by Dec-2025

Thiruvananthapuram, June 18 (UNI) As part of preventing the overuse of antibiotics, Kerala aims to achieve complete antibiotic literacy by December 2025 in the state.
"By the end of this year, Kerala aims to ensure that all hospitals and local bodies in the state conduct antibiotic awareness programmes, and that antibiotics are not dispensed without a valid prescription," Health Minister Veena George has said.
As part of the World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, the health minister released the district-level report of state-wide activities conducted to prevent the overuse of antibiotics.
"According to the report, a total of 2,852 programmes were organised with the participation of 395 local self-governments and 734 hospitals. Among them, 437 government hospitals held institutional-level events. Additionally, 404 private hospitals also participated."
"Through people's health centres, 5,710 events were conducted. A total of 2,238 educational institutions organised various activities. About 21,465 volunteers visited 327,000 households. Around 1,530 private pharmacies were involved in the awareness initiatives."
"Over 50,000 awareness posters and 316 videos were released. The Kerala has implemented model practices that can serve as an example to the nation."
Saying that most infections are caused by viruses, against which antibiotics are ineffective, the minister urged people to take antibiotics only when prescribed by a doctor. 'Never demand antibiotics or use them without a valid prescription,' she added.
Highlighting the guidelines for the use of antibiotics, she said, "Do not reuse old prescriptions to purchase antibiotics for new illnesses. Never share antibiotics with others."
"Even if symptoms subside, complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed by the doctor," she said.
"Never use leftover antibiotics after treatment. Do not discard unused or expired antibiotics on land or in water bodies. "Antibiotics can save lives, but unnecessary use can lead to antibiotic resistance," she added.
