Majhi urges Mamata to refrain from using 'Jagannath Dham' for Digha Temple

Bhubaneswar, May 6 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday urged his West Bengal counterpart, Mamata Banerjee, to reconsider the use of the name “Jagannath Dham” in reference to the Jagannath temple in Digha.
In a letter addressed to Banerjee, Majhi conveyed the Odisha government’s deep concern over naming the new temple in Digha as “Jagannath Dham.”
He emphasized that Shree Jagannath Dham in Puri is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites of Hinduism and holds unparalleled religious, spiritual, and cultural significance not only for the people of Odisha but also for millions of devotees across India and the world.
Majhi stated that the term “Jagannath Dham” carries a unique and sacrosanct identity intrinsically linked to Puri.
Using this name for any other temple or location, he said, undermines the sentiments of millions of pilgrims and devotees, and dilutes the distinct heritage of Shree Jagannath Dham in Puri.
The Chief Minister added that while the devotion to Lord Jagannath across regions is acknowledged and appreciated, the use of the term “Jagannath Dham” in official and promotional contexts for the Digha temple is likely to create confusion among devotees, erode the historical identity of Puri as the original and revered abode of the Lord, and hurt the religious sentiments of the people of Odisha.
Majhi requested Banerjee to refrain from using the term “Jagannath Dham” in official naming, communication, and promotional materials related to the Digha temple.
“I sincerely hope that the Government of West Bengal will uphold the spirit of interstate respect and cultural sensitivity in this matter and take the necessary steps to address our concerns,” Majhi concluded.
