Washington, May 10 (UNI) Russian Ambassador to Washington Alexander Darchiev announced a minute of silence as part of an event at the Russian Embassy in the United States dedicated to Victory Day, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

On Friday, Russia celebrated the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, also known as the Great Patriotic War among post-Soviet states.

"I announce a moment of silence to commemorate the fallen heroes," Darchiev said.

Several hundred people attended the event at the Russian diplomatic mission, including survivors of the Siege of Leningrad, frontline soldiers, home front workers, and ambassadors of foreign countries to the United States.
