Monsoon havoc: Mizoram assesses scale of damage as skies clear

Aizawl, June 4 (UNI) As monsoon rains finally abated in Mizoram by Tuesday afternoon, a clearer picture has emerged of the destruction left in their wake.
While no additional human casualties have been reported since Saturday, damage assessments
from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) under the disaster management and rehabilitation department reveal widespread devastation across the state.
With the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) state centre forecasting drier conditions ahead, schools resumed on Wednesday after a four-day precautionary closure. However, the state continues to grapple with the aftermath of a week-long deluge that triggered hundreds of landslides, roadblocks, and widespread infrastructural collapse.
Preliminary reports indicate landslides and landslips occurred at 675 locations, disrupting transportation and daily life. Blocked roads — 310 in total — left numerous vehicles and
travellers stranded, with some routes remaining inaccessible despite ongoing clearance
operations.
Structural damage has also been extensive. At least 269 buildings have either collapsed or
sustained severe damage due to landslides, rockfalls, and mudslides. The SEOC update
released at 4 pm on Wednesday confirmed the evacuation of 457 families since the onset
of the disaster.
Among them, 270 families were displaced after their homes became uninhabitable, while 165
were relocated due to flooding. In some flood-affected low-lying areas, especially along the
Tlawng and Khawthlangtuipui rivers, water levels have receded enough for a number of
families to return home.
Despite improved weather, restoration of essential services remains a challenge. Power supply continues to be erratic, with many localities across the state — including towns and rural areas — still without electricity as of Wednesday. The power and electricity department is working round the clock to bring the situation under control.
Water supply, particularly in Aizawl and district headquarters, has also been severely affected. High turbidity in rivers, along with damage to infrastructure, has led to widespread scarcity. Four pumping sets were submerged, five intake points and fourteen pipelines were damaged, in addition to seven gravity pipelines and six distribution lines being affected, according to the latest official data.
As Mizoram begins the arduous task of recovery, authorities continue to monitor the situation, even as the worst of the monsoon fury appears to have passed.
