Kolkata, Mar 21 (UNI) Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) spinner Varun Chakravarthy believes that the new Indian Premier League (IPL) rule changes, particularly regarding ball changes due to dew, could benefit spinners in the upcoming season.
Among the most prominent rule changes is the lifting of the saliva ban. For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, bowlers will be allowed to use it to shine the ball. The BCCI lifted the ban after receiving a majority consensus from IPL captains in a landmark decision taken at the captains' meeting in Mumbai. The International Cricket Council had made the saliva ban permanent in 2022, but the IPL operates under its own regulations, and the latest move could set a precedent for the global game.
The 18th season will also witness tactical innovations, including a major change to counter dew's impact. The second innings of evening matches will see a fresh ball introduced from the 11th over, provided the on-field umpires deem the dew factor significant, as the trend of high-scoring games is likely to continue. However, this rule will not apply to afternoon games.
Discussing the modifications on the eve of the IPL opener against RCB here, Chakravarthy remarked, "I did notice them, but I don’t think they will make much of a difference regarding the saliva ban being lifted. However, the ability to change the ball due to dew might help spinners. The moment the ball is changed, the 11th, 12th, and 13th overs will likely be bowled by spinners because the ball won’t be as difficult to grip. That’s something I foresee happening."
Expressing confidence ahead of the new IPL season, Chakravarthy stated that he closely observes and learns from teammate Sunil Narine.
"Basically, whatever he does, I just observe and learn," he said, praising Narine's skills and preparedness. "He was in good form last year as well. We've had conversations this year, and he looks well-prepared. He seems ready to take on challenges, just like I did last year during COVID. So, I'm very excited to see him play this year."
On his personal ambitions, Chakravarthy acknowledged his passion for filmmaking. "My senior, Ashwin, says that despite my success in cricket, my ultimate dream is to become a movie director. Yes, filmmaking is a hobby of mine, and after cricket, I do think about pursuing it. However, I haven't made any concrete applications in that direction yet," he stated.
Regarding KKR’s approach to the new IPL season, he emphasised the importance of treating it as a fresh start. "When we talk about a champion team returning to the tournament, we are treating it as a fresh start. But of course, past experiences remain in the back of our minds. Every match in the IPL is different. Last year, we had both our biggest victory and a huge loss. As experts say, you have to treat each season as a new tournament and start from scratch," he explained.
On reports of a key player potentially missing the season, Chakravarthy said, "I just heard about it, but it's not confirmed. Even I am not aware of the full details."
Sending a message to fans, he expressed optimism for the tournament. "I'm sure they will support good cricket. There are great players on both sides, and I’m looking forward to a competitive contest."
As defending champions, Chakravarthy reaffirmed KKR’s commitment to retaining their title. "We aim to defend our title this year. We have a great squad, excellent team management, and a strong international core. We're very excited for the season ahead." UNI BDN SSP
