TruAlt Bioenergy gets OMC status

Bengaluru, June 11 (UNI) In a significant step towards bolstering India's clean energy roadmap, TruAlt Bioenergy Limited — the country’s largest ethanol producer and a leading integrated biofuels company — has been officially granted Oil Marketing Company (OMC) status, enabling it to market and retail petroleum products across India.
With this authorisation, TruAlt becomes one of the first private biofuel enterprises in India to secure the coveted OMC recognition, placing it alongside established public sector players in the fuel distribution sector. The move signals a major milestone in the company's strategic expansion and aligns with the government's thrust on cleaner, decentralised energy solutions.
TruAlt will soon launch a national network of more than 100 retail outlets, beginning with Karnataka and Maharashtra, offering conventional fuels like petrol and diesel alongside biofuels such as ethanol (E93), Bio-CNG, and electric vehicle (EV) services including charging and battery swapping facilities. The blended model aims to deliver a future-ready, integrated refuelling experience to Indian consumers.
Speaking on the development, Vijay Nirani, Managing Director of TruAlt Bioenergy, said, "Securing OMC status marks a defining step in TruAlt Bioenergy’s growth journey. This milestone enables us to directly serve India’s evolving fuel needs while accelerating the shift toward cleaner energy."
He added that the company will prioritise setting up fuel stations in high-demand urban corridors and underserved rural regions. “Our model is rooted in rural empowerment — sourcing biomass directly from farmers and reinvesting value back into local communities through employment and circular agriculture,” he said.
As per OMC norms, at least 5% of TruAlt’s upcoming retail outlets will be in notified remote areas, aiding the government’s goal of last-mile fuel accessibility. The initiative is expected to create over 2,000 new jobs and boost the rural economy.
TruAlt currently commands a 7% share in India’s molasses-based ethanol market and 3.7% overall share in the ethanol supply space, making it a vital contributor to India’s Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP). The company is also rapidly scaling up its Compressed Biogas (CBG) production and is poised to become one of the largest Bio-CNG producers in the country.
India’s energy sector is witnessing a transformative shift. The fiscal year 2024–25 saw the country record its highest-ever petroleum consumption at 239.5 million metric tonnes (MMT), with surging demand for petrol and clean alternatives like ethanol. Ethanol blending in petrol has already touched 18.4% this year, nearing the national target of 20%.
TruAlt’s forward-looking strategy also includes foraying into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with plans to set up a 10 crore litre per annum production facility. Once operational, it is likely to be among the largest such ethanol-based SAF projects globally, positioning India at the forefront of the clean aviation fuel movement.
