Home and Personal Care industry focusses on eco-friendly ingredients for sustainability

New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) The Rs 65,000 crore Home & Personal Care Industry has pledged to focus on environmental sustainability, driven by consumer demand and a growing awareness of the environmental impact of products and packaging, leading to a shift towards eco-friendly ingredients, packaging and manufacturing process.
The Indian Home and Personal Care Industry Association (IHPCIA) hosted a key conference in New Delhi, focusing on sustainability and innovation in the home and personal care sector. The event brought together industry leaders, experts, and researchers to discuss trends, technologies, and strategies shaping a sustainable future for the industry.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, emphasized the importance of integrating new technologies, natural ingredients, and sustainable solutions in home and personal care products. "We need to shift toward environmentally responsible practices, and innovation is key to achieving sustainability," the Minister remarked, highlighting the importance of adopting green technologies.
Industry leaders discussed the growing consumer preference for herbal and organic products, opening up opportunities for innovation. With consumers demanding high-quality products that are both effective and environmentally responsible, the conference underscored the industry's commitment to biodegradable packaging, chemical-free formulations, and technology-driven solutions.
Sanjay Trivedi, Founder of IHPCIA, stressed the importance of affordability, sustainability, and natural ingredients in home and personal care products. He emphasized reducing unnecessary packaging through the use of concentrated products to minimize environmental impact. "We aim to create products that are not only sustainable but also affordable and effective, reducing waste," Trivedi stated.
Nadir Godrej, Chairman and Managing Director of Godrej Group, discussed the company’s dedication to green technologies, highlighting innovations like Godrej’s magic liquid, sold in powder form, where consumers add water to the bottle, reducing packaging waste. "We focus on biodegradable plastics and making the size of plastic smaller to reduce waste," said Godrej, stressing the role of innovation in sustainability.
Dr. Badri Narayanan Gopalakrishnan from NITI Aayog spoke about the government’s role in supporting sustainability within the sector. He emphasized the importance of policy reforms and public-private partnerships in achieving long-term sustainability goals.
Rajat Arora from Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) discussed the growing consumer demand for sustainable products and HUL’s efforts in responsible sourcing and biodegradable product formulations. He noted that HUL is adapting its production processes to meet consumer expectations for eco-friendly products.
The industry noted that investment in renewables options will require an investment of around 15,000 crore in comparison to huge investment expected in other technologies which shows the stark difference in capex needs. “The time for change is now. The change has to a leap frog and not in steps,” the industry representatives said.
Prof. Aniruddha Bhalchandra Pandit, Vice-Chancellor of the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, shared insights on the role of AI in sustainability. "AI solutions help companies quickly identify environmentally sustainable products and reduce waste. Development cycles have decreased from years to months, allowing faster delivery of green alternatives," said Dr. Pandit.
The conference concluded by recognising India’s rapidly growing home and personal care market, both domestically and globally. The event underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration and innovation to drive sustainability forward in the industry.
