Gilchrist hints at Dhoni's IPL exit as CSK struggle for survival

Gilchrist hints at Dhoni's IPL exit as CSK struggle for survival

Mumbai, Apr 30 (UNI) Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist has hinted that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni may not feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year, saying the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman has "nothing more to prove" and has "achieved it all".
Speaking during a broadcast interaction on Wednesday, Gilchrist said, "The big one — MS Dhoni — he has nothing more to prove to anyone in the game. He’s achieved it all. MS, well, he’ll know what he wants to do, but perhaps he doesn’t need to be there next year.”* He also described the former India captain as a champion and an icon."
Fueling further speculation, Dhoni himself made a tongue-in-cheek remark during the toss in today's crucial match against Punjab Kings, saying, "I don’t know I’m coming for the next game (laughs)."
While the comment was made in jest, it has added to the growing uncertainty around the 42-year-old’s future, especially as CSK struggle in IPL 2025, with fans across the country treating each appearance as potentially his last.
CSK are currently facing a critical phase, having won only two of their nine matches so far. After missing the playoffs in 2020 and 2022, the franchise staged remarkable comebacks to lift the trophy in 2021 and 2023, raising similar hopes for the ongoing season following their 2024 exit.
However, CSK’s playoff chances now depend on winning all five of their remaining matches — starting with the Punjab clash — to reach a maximum of 14 points. Even that may not suffice, as several other teams are on course to cross the 16-point mark, and CSK’s poor net run rate further diminishes their prospects.
Dhoni, who resumed captaincy duties after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s withdrawal due to injury, has made limited contributions with the bat this season. Nevertheless, his impact behind the stumps remains formidable, as he currently tops the stumping charts in IPL 2025. His quickfire 26* off 11 balls against Lucknow Super Giants played a crucial role in CSK’s most recent victory and earned him the Player of the Match award.
Despite sporadic batting success, Dhoni’s leadership, strategic acumen and occasional brilliance continue to anchor CSK’s campaign. Yet with each passing game, speculation mounts over whether this will be the swansong of one of cricket’s most iconic figures.
Dhoni, who led India to three major ICC titles and has guided CSK to five IPL championships, has not officially confirmed if the 2025 season will be his last.
